An Enchanting Grimoire

  • Not sure when this showed up, but love it!! 🔥

Been hoping for an improved Mastodon web mobile design for a while now. The next thing to improve (imo) would be removing the expanded menu and putting the items inside it in other more contextually relevant spots of the Mastodon experience. 🧐 I have recs for anyone that wants to see them.

  • I’m learning how I want to format posts on WordPress much better so that not only the metadata is better, but also Fediverse compatibility.

For example, I didn’t know that if I change the post format to “image” or “video” that it automatically shows up on Fedi apps like Pixelfed which are built for image and video posts. I was worried that any posts with photos would show up on Pixelfed (or similar) and I’m super impressed with how this is implemented. All post types seem to show up on Mastodon which is cool. I wish these details were more clear and that the WordPress ActivityPub experience was more refined, but we’ll get there I hope. 😅🤞

I’m gonna keep exploring these pieces so that the experience for both my domain and across the Fedi is as great as it can be! 😎

  • ActivityPub needs to become a core pillar of the internet imo, so everything can be federated. 🤩 I have so many ideas for federating all the things and I want to make them real, but need a dev friend to help. 😂 I feel like the Internet would be so much more fun this way though!

  • Now that I’ve been exploring Funkwhale for a couple weeks, I’ve been very curious about a few things. 🧐

I reached out to the creators on Mastodon to see if I could help with design, and they were really open which was cool! For now I’m gonna hold off on my curiosities and questions until Funkwhale 2.0 comes out cuz it sounds like it’s fairly imminent! I really hope so. 🤞

  • I’ve been really enjoying Funkwhale and Qobuz after finally opening accounts for them! 🤩 I’ve been researching them and keeping my eyes on them for a while now and decided to dive in. 🌊

Since signing up for Qobuz I also started a bit of a deep dive on hi-res audio since they offer hi-res audio tracks. I wanted to understand if I really need to upgrade all my music cuz I’ve never been dissatisfied with music in the past and think it sounds really beautiful. Even with my plebian setup of non hi-res audio and basic earbuds. 🤠 It’s such a complex little niche of the universe that I’ve been curious about for a long time. I know I’ve only barely scratched the surface, but I got what I needed.

I also love the concept of Funkwhale SO MUCH! I’m really enjoying testing it out and designing a possible future where it’s my home for music and all things audio. 🔥🔥 It’s been really fun exploring the experience and design too and discovering many UX pitfalls and adjustments to be made. But I’m gonna wait for Funkwhale 2.0 to see how much of it is improved. It’s supposed to be quite a lot! 🤷‍♂️ But it’s such a fun twist on music and I’ve always wanted to make my music more social so I really hope the improvements around federation are solid! 🤞

  • Something I’ve been thinking about recently is how I feel like any type of digital experience could be decentralized and federated. I think this is SO cool!! 🤩 Idk if it actually could be, but in my head the systems seem to align.

For example one specific area I’ve been wondering about is what if there was a federated way to shop? If it’s not making sense yet, what I’m thinking is kinda like Etsy, except not all controlled by one big mega corp. A bunch of shop owners can take back control and ownership of their shop. They can build and sell products on their own terms. They can connect with shoppers more organically and it all happens with a little Fediverse magic. ✨

The reason it all connected so well for me was because shopping requires making posts of content just like any other digital platform. These posts include text elements, images, maybe video, buttons, and other common things that any digital experience has. I feel like the Fediverse could handle all of this in such a beautiful way.

I want to understand the outbox/inbox concepts of ActivityPub to figure out how they might fit a shopping/marketplace context. But I feel like it would be similar to how it works on any other ActivityPub platform.

In truth, I know I’m simplifying and it’s all very technical and complex. Maybe it wouldn’t work at all. 🤷‍♂️ But I’d really like to try and connect more of the dots to see if it could be possible! We deserve a digital marketplace that’s built on open principles and human connection, rather than what we have now. 🔥🙌
