An Enchanting Grimoire

  • I’d really like all my device details and settings neatly organized into one app (instead of 3). Please. 😅 Pebble….? 🙏

  • What if Material design was still defined by a philosophy or paper and ink? How would it have evolved to rival something like “Liquid Glass” in a much more warm, tactile, and human way? I was always mesmerized by the philosophy behind the original Material design and was sad when it seemed they started to shift away from it with M3. Don’t get me wrong, I do like the current Material Design, but think of how incredibly fascinating it might have been to refine the paper and ink aesthetic for the improved graphical processing capabilities of computers today? And the upcoming XR system? 🤩

This is something I’m very curious about exploring and trying to visualize a digital paper and ink design system that’s much more refined, whimsical, and even more stunning. I think we can make something pretty magical! ✨😏

  • One of the most challenging parts about what I’m creating with One Quest is that I’m not just designing components, creating a brand or writing articles. I’m doing all of that while also trying to understand how my brand and digital identity fits within the broader tech ecosystem. I’m doing all of that while pushing myself to figure out how to build it all with one device, and it’s my Android computer/”phone”. I’m creating systems for content creation like image editing, photo editing, file organization and naming, and more.

It’s a very fun playground, and a very challenging one. 🧐

  • You can make any experience beautiful, wherever it is. All you need is to give it the energy and space that’s required to understand the system deeply and then focus on making that system shine!

This is why I don’t just believe that mobile computing deserves a primary seat at the table, but it’s why I live everyday with my Android computer as my primary computer. I design with it, sketch ideas, write content, and so much more! I’m trying to prove that you can have a really incredible computing experience with one device that adapts to your contexts and needs. Yes, there are still barriers to this being a really pleasant experience that’s as magical as I want, but I’m determined to show that it can be done, even under less than ideal circumstances.

Imagine the digital experiences we’ll create when we have one device powering them and adapting to wherever we are?? 🤩

  • Something I’ve been thinking about recently is how I feel like any type of digital experience could be decentralized and federated. I think this is SO cool!! 🤩 Idk if it actually could be, but in my head the systems seem to align.

For example one specific area I’ve been wondering about is what if there was a federated way to shop? If it’s not making sense yet, what I’m thinking is kinda like Etsy, except not all controlled by one big mega corp. A bunch of shop owners can take back control and ownership of their shop. They can build and sell products on their own terms. They can connect with shoppers more organically and it all happens with a little Fediverse magic. ✨

The reason it all connected so well for me was because shopping requires making posts of content just like any other digital platform. These posts include text elements, images, maybe video, buttons, and other common things that any digital experience has. I feel like the Fediverse could handle all of this in such a beautiful way.

I want to understand the outbox/inbox concepts of ActivityPub to figure out how they might fit a shopping/marketplace context. But I feel like it would be similar to how it works on any other ActivityPub platform.

In truth, I know I’m simplifying and it’s all very technical and complex. Maybe it wouldn’t work at all. 🤷‍♂️ But I’d really like to try and connect more of the dots to see if it could be possible! We deserve a digital marketplace that’s built on open principles and human connection, rather than what we have now. 🔥🙌

  • I seriously think it would be so cool if all tech was built around the modular, scalable concept of federation and open standards that everyone can use! Like, seriously, why is this not how we built it from the beginning??

For example, wouldn’t it be so cool if instead of needing to have an account with this shop, and an account with this other one, and I can only save certain products in one or another, I just have an open wishlist that’s tied to my digital identity and every shop can be federated and connected to the same standards so that wherever I am I can connect with shops and add products and purchase them from my identity. I don’t need to have a fragmented amalgamation of digital identities and experiences. Please can we federate everything digital??

  • I’ve thought for so many years that Google could have had a much more powerful rebrand for its many app icons if it did something like this:

I designed these icons a few years ago to match the beautiful new Chrome OS icons that we’re coming out, cuz I loved the aesthetic so much! Then Material You came out and it felt like this style was the perfect match for the next iteration of Google’s design system, and I’ve always been confused why they decided to go with their confusing multicolored icons instead.

Like c’mon, this other style has so much more character and life! 🤩

  • Made quite a few changes and had some big breakthroughs with WordPress and both the visual design and structure of my brand and digital domain here. 😎 Things are really starting to heat up in lots of beautiful ways!! There’s still lots left to refine and it’s possible I might have gone a bit too deep with some things, but I’m overall super happy with what I’ve been exploring.

Here’s what the design used to be:

    Here’s where it’s at now:

I’m SO freaking satisfied with the category navigation at the top and it was really challenging for me to figure out how to build all of it custom using the blocks editor. I would love for the animations between them to be more fluid cuz WordPress is very basic and has no animations, but that’s something to keep looking into later!

I also moved “Brand” which was previously its own section in the primary bottom navigation, to a section of “Lore” since it’s definitely a part of my Lore and I thought that turned out super well and makes soooo much more sense. And made a ton of improvements to the Lore screen content, organization, and styles (and there’s still more to come) but I love the direction it’s heading in and things are starting to feel like they’re coming together in a really beautiful way. 🔥

Because I moved the Brand page into Lore, now I have an empty third destination in that primary bottom navigation bar. I might not fill it, and I’m not quite sure what it’ll be yet, but I’m excited to explore options and see if there could be something valuable there. I really like the balance of 3 navigation destinations for some reason….🤔 But for now, we’ve got this 👇 (which is pretty clever if I say so myself 😏).
